Environment
At Maverick Creek Ranch, our Axis herd lives in a free-range environment,
on 1036 acres dotted with live oaks and mesquite. Their food consists
largely of native grasses (such as curly mesquite grass), improved
grasses (such as Klein grass), and young sprouts of wheat, oats
or hay grazer, augmented with browse. We provide supplemental protein
pellets, corn, and alfalfa hay during the winter months and in late
summer when grasses are not as plentiful. The animals drink fresh
well water and are not treated with growth hormones, chemicals,
or inoculations. We have Monitored Herd Status from the State of
Texas and the USDA, and our herd is certified to be Tuberculosis
free. The USDA has certified our products as free-range.
